About 260 thousand

62.3682 km²

Originally named Pattsiran ("thermal spring"), Shilin was once home to the aboriginal Ketagalan tribe, which lived here over 200 years ago. Until the Qing Dynasty, Shilin was referred to as Zhilan Fortress. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, as many literary talents from Shilin had passed the imperial examination, the town was subsequently renamed "Shilin", which means "congregation of scholars and talents".

Shilin is best known for two areas:the Tianmu Commercial Circle and Shilin Night Market.
  1. Tianmu Commercial Circle: When the Kuomintang moved its seat of government to Taiwan from mainland China in 1949, many legislators, high-ranking government officials, expats, and foreign diplomats moved to this area, transforming it into a high-class residential district. As Taiwan’s economy developed rapidly over time, Tianmu has also become a trendy shopping destination for the younger generation.
  2. Shilin Night Market: This world-renowned night market is a shopping and dining area lined with street food stalls, small eateries, and a variety of stores. Situated close to MRT Jiantan station, this popular night market attracts thousands of locals and foreign tourists alike, and constitutes one of Taipei’s premier food and shopping destinations.
