Fun for Kids at the 2009 Taipei Children's Arts Festival (July 8 - August 2)

Taipei Children's Arts Festival happily celebrates its 10th birthday this year with guests from all over the world. They will bring to Taipei a series of exciting performances, workshops, exhibitions and films to fill every summer's day!
We are delighted to feature a Taipei-Canada joint-production effort in Petit Pierre; both children and parents will surely be inspired by Grandpa Pierre’s determination in overcoming challenges, resulting in a beautiful artwork that puts smiles to faces. In the shadow puppetry’s adaptation of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale from Germany, The Brave Tin Soldier, the adventure begins inside a gigantic billowy dome, trapping the audience instantly in a magical kingdom of castles, ballerinas and experiences of a turbulent voyage with the leading character.
What surprises are waiting for us in the theaters this year? You got it! Surprise from Austria brings us on a trip to explore the different personalities of surprises, what sounds they make, what color they are, what size, what emotion they carry, and so on. Come and take part in the 50-minute travel full of surprises from the STELLA award-winning production, Surprise.
The Mermaid Theater of Nova Scotia brings us something fishy and fuzzy this year, Swimmy, Frederick & Inch by Inch. Adapted from Leo Lionni’s three famous children’s books (each entitled to its headlining creature), the puppet performance offers an exceptional experience for the kids’ first trip to the theater, something that will trigger imagination along with a curiosity for literature and theatric arts.
If you think that’s all, you haven’t seen the most popular children’s productions in Taiwan. IfKids Theater brings a double bill to the festival, My Grandfather’s Diary uncovers a fun and touching performance that emphasized the bonding of family ties from the children’s perspectives; while Guardian Angels reveals the importance of cherishing our environment in a fairyland. Shiny Shoes Children’s Theater brings A Good Time at the Antique Shop-Le-Le's Music Box on search for a long-lost treasure in an antique shop and ends up discovering love and hope in the music-filled performance.
We would also like to invite the children of Taipei to participate in our DIY workshops. Start off your experience with TCAF by joining Canada’s Le Carrousel in “Petit Pierre’s Dreambase Creative Workshop”, together building a fascinating merry-go-round and see it on display outdoors as TCAF’s first-ever public art installation. How about participating in Australia’s “Peoples’ Puppet Workshop” by Snuff Puppets to create and build your own puppet? You and your puppets will be the highlights of TCAF’s August 2nd festival finale!
We believe that one of the missions of TCAF is to cultivate compassion and values in our junior citizens through immersing them in arts and culture, and this year, coinciding with the Summer Deaflympics in Taipei, many of our programs will be exploring the themes of compassion and perseverance. Throughout the festival, performances plus 132 free children’s films, 126 free community performances will take place at various locations across Taipei’s 12 administrative districts, including 15 venues and 8 large outdoor performances in Da-An Forest Park of Taipei City. We hope that TCAF will inspire our children’s imagination, allowing their creativity to soar and may put a smile to every child’s face to make this a wonderful and memorable summer!
