High Schoolers Participate in 2020 Model UN Workshop at YDO
The Youth Development Office (YDO) collaborated with the National Taiwan University Model United Nations Club to hold the 2020 Taipei City Model UN Workshop between December 12 and 14.
A total of 98 high school students from approximately 40 schools across Taipei, New Taipei, and Taoyuan congregated at YDO to discuss topics ranging from global internet safety to renewable energy sources.
During the 3-day workshop, students took on the role of representatives from various nation conducting mock meetings. Through the conference, the students learn about how to express their positions, participate in discussions, lobby, and integrate the different opinions to draw up a resolution.
Guests invited to speak at the event include: former diplomat Liu Shih-chieh, who shared with the students his views of Taiwan, US and PRC relations in the pandemic era and life as a diplomat; Speaker Jack Huang talked about the difference between UN works and those of private companies, and the importance of serving people in the career with the UN, and more. On the final day of the workshop, the participants visited the Mainland Affairs Council and attended a presentation by Deputy Minister Chiu on Taiwan-PRC relations and the international scene today.
According to YDO, the Model UN event is an important channel for students to connect with the global community. Through the workshops, the participants have a chance to exercise critical thinking and strengthen teamwork abilities, as well as nurturing their international perspectives.
