Mayor Attends 2020 Autumn Martyr Induction Ceremony at Martyrs’ Shrine
Mayor Ko Wen-je attended the 2020 Autumn Season Martyr Induction Ceremony at the National Martyrs’ Shrine on September 3.
During his speech, the mayor paid his respect to the martyrs enshrined in the monument and the firefighter Hsieh Chih-hsiung who gave his life on duty. He also expressed his condolences to the surviving family members of Hsieh – the firefighter’s wife Chou Yu-ling and father Hsieh Chin-chang.
The mayor pointed out that he is attending the autumn season martyr induction ceremony with reverence and respect. He pointed out that Hsieh served as a rescue corps instructor at the Taichung City Fire Department since 2012. The firefighter has also participated in major rescue efforts such as the Tainan earthquake in 2016, the Hualian earthquake in 2018, and the 2019 drowning accident in Taichung.
Hsieh perished during a mission locating the source of the flames during a fire at a disposable tableware factory in Taichung City on October 3, 2019. The stock of highly-combustible materials led to the rapid spread of fire and a collapse which killed the firefighter.
Ko remarked that the heroic action of Hsieh convinced Taipei City Government to induce the firefighter into the National Martyr’s Shrine. He also expressed his gratitude to Hsieh’s surviving family members, as well as members from Taichung City Fire Department, Ministry of Defense and Taipei City Government for attending the ceremony.
