Rebuilding of motorcycle ramp on Chongyang Bridge for enhanced traffic safety

In response to newspaper coverage made on January 7, 2015, pointing out that “an improper design of Chongyang Bridge has caused over 200 motorcycle accidents in 4 years”, Taipei City Traffic Engineering Office expressed that there had been 68 and 50 cases of auto and motorcycle accidents, with 19 and 81 people injured, respectively, at the Taipei City side of the bridge between 2011 and November 2014, according to the statistics provided by the Traffic Division of Taipei City Police Department. Among these accidents, 16 cases involved motorcycles at the turning ramp, where 20 people were injured and no deaths took place, representing 13.56% of all accident counts on Chongyang Bridge. Facilities had been successively added in recent years to increase traffic safety on the bridge, reducing the count of motorcycle accidents on the ramp from 7 in 2012 to 2 in 2014.
Even though the accident count has been reduced, the New Construction Office of Taipei City Public Works Department started a plan in 2013 to increase the radius of the new turning ramp for motorcycles to 25 meters. The project is scheduled to begin in 2016 and will be completed in 2017, before which time Taipei City Traffic Engineering Office will conduct reviews again on measures for traffic safety. Coordination with New Taipei City’s Department of Transportation will also be underway to help guide motorcyclists to switch to public transportation, in order to reduce the heavy flow of motorcycle traffics and meet the need of motorcyclists for a safer road environment.
