The Department of Transportation convened the fifth meeting of the Taipei City Taxi Advisory and Review Committee to discuss a proposal outlining a potential increase in taxi fares on January 29.
Following discussions, the members of the committee gave the green light after considering factors such as operating costs, taxi vacancy rate, and passenger opinions. The approved plan comprises the following:
 Initial fare remains at NT$70 for the first 1.25 kilometers.
 Increment fare has been raised to NT$5 for every additional 200 meters.
 Fare for traffic congestion idling time is now NT$5 per 1 minute and 20 seconds.
 Late night surcharge remains at NT$20.
 A new surcharge of NT$50 per trip has been added for hiring wheelchair-accessible cabs.
According to the Public Transportation Office, the current rate was authorized and implemented in November of 2007 – over 7 years ago. The latest fare hike proposal was introduced by the Taxi Drivers’ Association in May of 2014.
After being reviewed by the advisory committee, the plan will be forwarded to the City Executive Meeting for confirmation. The date of implementation will be announced after talks with the association, the taxi union, New Taipei City, and Keelung City.
The committee also approved the holiday fare rates for Chinese New Year. In the future, the period of holiday fare rates will begin two days before Chinese New Year’s Eve and end of the last day of the Chinese New Year break. If the holiday period is less than 10 days, the duration of the holiday fare rate will still span 10 days – with the end date being the last day of the Chinese New Year break.
The holiday surcharge will be a flat NT$20 on top of the most current taxi fare rate.
