Annual Street Dance Tournament Held at TRTC’s Beitou Depot

Contestants compete at the Metro Street Dance Competition 2023The Metro Street Dance Competition 2023 took place at the Beitou Depot on August 19, 20, 26, and 27. The event is a collaboration between the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) and the Cathay United Bank.


During the event on August 20, Mayor Chiang Wan-an appeared on the stage dressed in hip-hop outfit, joining breakdance athlete Cheng Yu-ning and both domestic and foreign jury members on stage. He encouraged the young contestants to exercise their creativity and vitality under the spotlight. Hopefully, the competition will serve as a key to unlocking the dreams for the talented young men and women.


Now in its 18th edition, the Metro Street Dance Competition 2023 also celebrates the 50 anniversaries of international hip-hop culture. The roots of street dance and hip-hop culture can be traced back to the urban environment and subways of New York City. The theme of this year’s street dance tournament is ‘Power from the Streets’ and will take place at the Beitou Depot for the first time.


To promote sports as a pastime for all, this year’s street dance competition has joined hands with sports brand Spartan Race to organize an obstacle course demo, allowing visitors both young and old to try out what it is like to compete in an obstacle race.


With breaking being chosen as a sport category for the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024, the organizers invited Cheng to showcase her breakdance skills before the contestants and audience. The mayor presented a gift to the promising athlete and wished her success on her road to the Paris Olympics.


This year’s street dance competition is divided into the Youth division and Adult division. The preliminaries took place on August 19 and 20, while the finals and BBoy Battle are slated for August 26 and 27. A special stage performance celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop culture will feature celebrities such as Youngboy Melody, FiveWood, Rapshark, Sheng Tai, Forty, David Hsiao, Lin Chieh-hsin, and NEXT GIRLZ Purplecrush.
