The image of delicious greasy food and the smile on the face of eaters are indeed extremely attractive to TV viewers. Huang Lishan, director of the Endocrine and Metabolism Department of the Zhongxing Branch of Taipei City Hospital, points out that poor eating habit is one of the most important factors that cause diabetes in youngsters. People carrying diabetic genes should pay more attention to the problem.
Dr. Huang expresses that diabetes is a congenitally deficient diseases (genetically determined), which entails avoiding acquired maladjustment (poor diet and lack of exercise). It is a hyperglycemia syndrome caused by inadequate insulin secretion or insulin resistance. People with such genetic genes should strictly control their diet and body weight to prevent diabetes.
Concerning sugar, Dr. Huang reminds the public that the maximum daily sugar intake should be about 9 pieces of cube sugar for most people. However, do you know how many pieces of cube sugar are added in your cup of 700 C.C. pearl milk tea with normal sweetness? The answer is 28 pieces. Even a cup of “low sugar” milk tea may contain as many as 10 pieces of cube sugar. For example, one woman needs 1,600 kilocalories a day, and one cup of 700 C.C. whole-sugar pearl milk tea contains 550 kilocalories. It will take three hours’ fast walking to burn off these unnecessary 550 kilocalories.
When it comes to exercise, Dr. Huang says that diabetes is a “civilized” illness and modern people must develop the habit of arranging time to exercise. Exercising together with friends and partners can make the habit formed more easily. The well-known advertisement catchwords should be changed to “I will find time to exercise with you no matter how busy I am.”
