The Taipei Department for Youth kicked off its "2024 Taipei Model United Nations Workshop" training course on November 23 at the Department’s International Conference Hall. The official sessions will take place from November 30 to December 1. The event features expert instructors from the Taiwan Model United Nations Association, providing high school students from 45 schools across Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, and Taoyuan, as well as exchange students from Brazil, the United States, and France, with an immersive Model United Nations (MUN) experience. The workshop aims to nurture global perspectives and leadership skills among youth.
Commissioner Yin Wei of the Department for Youth expressed his delight at the enthusiastic participation of students from both Taipei and neighboring cities. Reflecting on his own involvement in an MUN club during his time at National Taiwan University, Commissioner Yin shared his personal connection to MUN and emphasized the value of such experiences in deepening one’s understanding of international relations and advancing career development. He thanked the students for dedicating their weekend to the event and encouraged them to use the training not only to gain knowledge of international proceedings but also to forge meaningful friendships with like-minded peers.
This year’s event has drawn not only local participants but also exchange students from Brazil, the United States, and France. Through the exchange of diverse perspectives and experiences, participants are building friendships and gaining valuable insights in a multicultural setting. One first-time participant noted that the topics were both fascinating and challenging, and the step-by-step guidance from instructors offered a new perspective on international issues previously overlooked. Another student, who had hesitated to join an MUN club due to a lack of confidence, shared that this workshop provided an opportunity to improve public speaking skills and build beginner confidence. Meanwhile, a seasoned participant who has attended over seven MUN conferences highlighted the unique team-based country representation approach in this event, expressing excitement about how this structure could inspire teamwork and innovative outcomes.
The Department for Youth emphasized that the workshop’s training and official sessions provide a platform for students from diverse schools and backgrounds to connect and learn. Participants receive instruction on crafting logical arguments in UN-style documents, conducting research, and analyzing issues. By reviewing country position papers, students prepare strategies for the MUN conference to gain support from other representatives. During the official sessions, each student will act as a diplomat representing a different country, engaging in English debates and negotiations. This year’s theme focuses on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, with discussions addressing issues such as the labor conditions of disadvantaged youth, labor rights, and the elimination of discrimination.
The Department for Youth hopes the workshop will enhance participants’ international perspectives, communication skills, and leadership abilities while fostering critical thinking and intercultural communication. Beyond the event, students are encouraged to remain engaged with global issues and become articulate, globally-minded citizens who are passionate about international affairs.
