The Taipei city government had evaluated the implementation of taxi stops, and intended to expand the taxi waiting space. In addition to that, on February 12, 2015, free one hour parking became available at 93 public multi-storey car parks and underground car parks. The number of roadside taxi stops also increased to 13 with 58 lots (giving a total of 213 taxi stops and 1,134 lots). These new measures allowed taxi drivers to wait for passengers and stop temporarily for a rest as well as reduce taxies to stop along the roadside anytime. Taxi drivers would then be able to take a rest at the designated area.
According to the Taipei Public Transportation Office, roadside taxi stops had been set up at important traffic spots, hospitals and business buildings in the city, providing legal space for taxi drivers waiting for passengers. After further consideration, the Office decided to set up 13 more taxi stops with 58 parking lots. Thus, this gave a total of 213 taxi stops including 1,134 parking lots. As the Office considered that the taxi stops may influence the control and allocation of road space, at some taxi stops where demand for taxi service was less, taxi drivers were provided one hour free parking at nearby public car park. Therefore, there were not too many taxies occupying on the road causing busy traffic.
Taxi drivers could easily find a sign at the entrance of public car parks where free one hour parking was available for taxies. There were 93 public multi-storey and underground car parks operated under the Car Park Management Office, providing a total of 33,841 parking lots. Although during certain hours, some of these car parks were very busy and highly occupied. Taxi drivers could still choose to access to these car parks during off-time hours (15% parking space available as estimated) or when other drivers were leaving. Taxi drivers could either wait for passengers or take a rest, and have the one hour free parking service. Mobile phone service would still be accessible at 65 of these car parks so taxi drivers would not miss any phone call. This new measure had been announced on the signaling panel at the entrance of each public car park with relevant signs installed. The check-in process for one hour free parking had also been simplified and ready for access by all taxi drivers. The Office will continue to evaluate these measures and expand the taxi waiting space and resting space. The Office has always strived to improve taxi’s business environment, help taxi driver save fuel, and assure road traffic safety.
