In recent years, Taipei is being confronted by an environmental and public health challenge in the form of overpopulation of wild pigeons. The main cause of this crisis can be attributed to the abundant food these avian enjoy, which led to a rise in their numbers.
 
The Animal Protection Office (APO) calls upon the public to stop feeding wild pigeons. This is the surest way to stall the continued growth of feral pigeon population in Taipei.
 
City doves are known to make nests at locations such as beneath bridges, on balconies, and on top of exposed air conditioner frames. With the abundance of tall buildings across Taipei’s landscape, these birds do not have a problem finding suitable habitats in the urban environment, which in turns causes an increase of pests such as dove body lice and pigeon tick.
 
According to research, one of the reasons for the spike in wild pigeon population is indiscriminate feeding of birds by individuals. The abundance of food leads to higher hatching rate and nestling survival rate. Therefore, avoid feeding pigeons is a good way to control their population.
 
APO commissioned Future Environment Ecology Corporation to organize a series of community seminars and produce a short film on the topic of wild pigeon control, educating residents on how to reduce the impact of wild pigeons.
