MRT to Expand Pet Carrier Policy to Red Lines
Good news for pet owners! Starting Saturday, July 25, Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) will allow passengers with pet carriers to access 26 stations along the Red (Xinyi-Tamsui) Line during weekends and holidays – with the exception of MRT Taipei Main Station and MRT Daan Station.
According to TRTC, the pet carrier policy (effective weekends and holidays) sets a limit on the dimensions of large pet carriers (the total volume of the carrier – height, length, width – may not exceed 210 cm3, excluding wheels and support frames). Pet owners may purchase “Carry-on Pet Carrier Single Trip Ticket” at the information booth inside MRT stations. The ticket costs NT$80 and is valid for individual and pet carrier to use with unlimited distance for a single trip along the Red Line. Large size pet carriers are allowed onboard the first and last train, and the carrier cannot occupy handicap-reserved space.
As for pet carriers for small and medium-size pets (total volume does not exceed 175 cm3), they are treated as standard carry-ons and may board the train during standard operation hours without any special restriction or the need of additional ticket.
Starting January 2020, the pilot project allowing pet carriers onboard MRT trains running between MRT Tamsui Station and Zhongshan Station was implemented. The measure received positive response from the public. In light of the success, the policy was extended to include 26 stations along the Red Line starting July 25. Current, the company is reviewing the possibility of expanding the program to other MRT lines.
TRTC reminds riders bringing a pet carrier should make sure that the device is leakproof, waterproof and without feces , as well as making sure the pet can be fully contained within the carrier with no parts exposed.
