Cosplay Contest Attracts Young Audience to Ximending

During his speech, the mayor remarked that Ximending been the center for Taiwan’s fashion trends since the Japanese Colonial Era. It is one of the places which exemplifies Taipei’s characteristics as a diversified and multi-cultural city, attracting tourists from around the world. It is also a community that incorporates major cultures across East Asia, making it a must-visit destination for the younger generation.
 
According to Liu Chia-hsin, chairman of Taipei City Ximending Pedestrian Zone Development Promotion Association, Ximending has always served as an indicator of fashion trends. In recent years, the commercial district has integrated Japanese animation and manga culture in its activities, as well as placing the spotlight upon cosplay as a major theme.
 
The registration for this year’s tournament has set a new record, with 273 individual entries and 42 group entries. The pool of contestants ranges from veterans who have participated in the World Cosplay Summit in Japan to previous winners of the Ximending Cosplay Competition.
 
A total of 20 individuals and 12 groups will be determined by the jury for advancement into the finals. The total prize for this year’s event has reached NT$99,000, which is a significant increase from NT$88,000 last year.
