Mayor Presides over Groundbreaking Ceremony for Nanman Market Building
On November 17, Mayor Ko Wen-je attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Nanmen Market building at the construction site near MRT Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Station.
During his address, the mayor noted that he is very emotionally attached to the old Nanmen Market, since many entrees on the dinner table were purchased from market stalls. His wife frequents the market for grocery shopping. As a matter of fact, Taipei-ers see the market as the cradle of Taipei’s gourmet food scene. Vendors offer a range of products spanning dry foods to pastries. He believes that the market’s fame in traditional cuisine scene combined with convenient access will make the future complex a new landmark for the city.
Ko remarked that Nanmen Market is the oldest public market in Taipei boasting a rich history. However, the decision for a new building was set in stone when the previous mayor discovered that the market is actually a “sea-sand building”, containing concrete made from sea sand which undermine structural integrity.
Expressing his gratitude to Nanmen Market Self-governing Association Chairman Wang Chuan-kuo, the mayor stressed that the chairman played a key role in enabling the relocation of market stalls to the Nanmen Interim Market. Also, Nanmen Market received the 5-star Outstanding Market Certification from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, along with Taipei’s Shidong Market and Ningxia Market.
The new facility housing the market will be a 12-story SRC building containing 5 basement floors and taking up a total of 46,570 square meters. Offering 207 vehicle and 274 motorcycle parking squares, the edifice is slated for completion in January of 2023.
