Organized by the Department of Sports (SPD), the 2023 Taipei Preschooler Football Games took place at the Daonan Riverside Park Soccer Fields on May 20 and 21. 

The soccer event attracted over thousands of preschoolers, as well as parents and friends to cheer for the respective teams. The participants include tournament regulars such as Holly Child Care Center, Lion Soccer Club, Whirlwind Soccer Club, and Toayuan’s Love Love Preschool. This year, Georgia Preschool even registered 7 teams to compete in the tournament, which comprise over 70 toddlers. 

In addition to the veterans of the competition, there are also a number of newcomers participating in this year’s games for the first time. One of these teams is Ching-hwa Kindergarten, which is located near the Presidential Office in downtown Taipei. The team’s coach noted that the kids have undergone training for roughly six months, in the form of a 50-minute-long soccer session once a month. The primary purpose of the soccer lesson is to raise kids’ awareness in soccer and stimulate their interest in the sports. He is happy to see that more and more young kids are playing soccer nowadays, thanks to the general promotion efforts over the past decade. 

Team Lightning from Xinyi Elementary School Kindergarten successfully brought home the division trophy for the second year in a row. Ms. Lai and Ms. Chen, two faculty members who founded the team, pointed out that Team Lightning’s success can be attributed to the professional advice from both a local coach and another volunteer coach in Hong Kong, as well as parents’ support. 

The Daonan Soccer Fields is situated right next to Jinmei River, within a short walk from Taipei Zoo. It’s a great place for parents who plan to take their kids to the zoo after the games, or simply find a place to have them run around and play. SPD hopes to promote the great facility for both sports and leisure to residents by holding the event this year at the facility.
