Rail-type bicycle racks set up for trial in Taipei City to help improve the order of bicycle parking

To improve the order of bicycle parking in the City and enhance parking capacity per road section, Taipei City Parking Management and Development Office (the Office) is planning to introduce rail-type bicycle racks to offer greater flexibility in the use of space through the horizontal shifting ability of bicycle racks. Trials will be conducted near MRT Taipei City Hall Station, MRT Guting Station and RenAi Junior High School. If there are positive results, the new type of racks will be promoted for use throughout the City.
Even though traditional fixed bicycle racks offer convenience and safety for people to lock their bicycles, people often complain about insufficient parking spots at locations with higher demands for parking. Though lined bicycle parking areas allow more bicycles to park by ways of crowding into the area, it often draws complaints from people about several issues, such as inability to lock their bicycles for more safety, absence of support for the bicycle that will easily result in their falling, difficulty in getting the bicycles out of the crowded bicycles, etc. To improve these issues, the Office introduced the rail-type bicycle racks placed on a rail for horizontal movement. The racks feature unlevelled front and back to save space and achieve maximal usage of space. Compared to regular fixed racks, these new racks allow nearly twice the number of bicycles to park. To park and retrieve a bicycle, the racks can be moved aside to provide more space for your bicycle, keeping it from being jammed by neighboring bicycles. The Office has selected Taipei Metro Taipei City Hall Station, Taipei Metro Guting Station and RenAi Junior High School for the trial. Continuous observation will be underway concerning its operational convenience, durability, economic effectiveness of maintenance, and feedback from citizens. If positive results are obtained, this type of rack will be set up at locations with high demand for bicycle parking, or with disorderly parking condition (such as areas around Taipei Metro stations), so that the usage of space and order of parking will be enhanced and improved.
Currently, parking facilities for bicycles in the City include various types of fixed bicycle racks, such as front-wheel racks (87%), reverse-U-shaped rod racks (4%), high-low racks and dual-level bicycle racks (1.6% for the latter two types combined), as well as lined bicycle parking areas (7.4%). From January to October of 2014, 4,056 slots of bicycle racks have been added in the City, making for a cumulated total of 29,464 slots for bicycle parking in the City.
