Mayor Presents City Flag to Taipei’s National Games Delegation
The 2021 National Games in New Taipei City will kick off starting October 16. On October 14, Mayor Ko Wen-je presented the flag to the team of athletes representing Taipei City during a ceremony at the Taipei Stadium.
He hopes that the athletes will continue their outstanding performances and help Taipei secure its position as the city with the most medals for three years in a row. As long as the city keeps its leading position in the games, he is confident that Taipei City will emerge as the final champion of the National Games.
Taking place every 2 years, Ko pointed out that the National Games is the highest-ranking sports competition in Taiwan. This year, a total of 764 athletes from Taipei City will take part in 33 game categories at the tournament. He reminded the athletes to do their best and demonstrate the results of years of training to bring home the medals.
The mayor remarked that Taipei is heavily invested in sports development, boasting a comprehensive incentive system and grassroot sports athlete training stations. Also, being a doctor himself, Ko places an emphasis on sports injury, seeking to minimize the impact upon athletes through assistance by sports injury prevention team, sports injury medical care assistance, and sports injury prevention manpower stations.
Taipei City Councilor Lee Fu Chung-wu also attended the flag presentation ceremony and handed out cash bonus to the athletes on behalf of Taipei City Council. Sports Department Commissioner Li Tzai-li accepted the city flag from the mayor on behalf of the participating athletes.
