Taipei City Hospital Launches the Ready-to-drink Zhi’ai Decoction Special for Dementia Patients

As Taiwan has entered the aging society, the number of dementia patients has risen rapidly year by year. To take care of dementia patients, the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department of the Taipei City Hospital launches the ready-to-drink Zhi’ai decoction special for dementia patients, which is extracted by exclusive decoction machines under high temperature and high pressure in the Department of Pharmacy and then filled in the ready-to-drink packs by means of a sterile technique. The decoction can reduce the trouble of decocting traditional Chinese medicinal herbs at home, with the effect being much better than the herbal powder. It can be taken once or twice a day after being warmed in a microwave oven or via double boiling.

Lin Shungu, attending physician in the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department of the Ren’ai Branch of the Taipei City Hospital, says that dementia patients mainly show two symptoms: one is the deterioration of memory and thinking ability, such as forgetting what to buy when going to the market, and the other is chiefly emotional instability and behavioral abnormality, such as emotional outbursts and severe depression.
The Traditional Chinese Medicine Department of the Ren’ai Branch of the Taipei City Hospital launches the ready-to-drink Zhi’ai decoction special for dementia patients, which is composed of many medicinal herbs beneficial to the brain. The combination of acupuncture therapy and ready-to-drink medicinal herb pack brings newer and better treatment effect to dementia patients. The acupuncture therapy is focused on the head’s acupoints to stimulate the brain function directly. Most of patients show significant improvement one month after the treatment.
Dr. Lin also suggests that regular exercise, rich social life and eating more vegetables and fruits can effectively prevent dementia. He often teaches patients how to massage their acupoints in the clinic, and encourages patients and their caretakers to massage these acupoints frequently to facilitate the treatment effect.
