2017 Eid al-Fitr Celebration in Taipei
In the interest of making Taipei a Muslim-friendly city, the Department of Information and Tourism (TPEDOIT) will be holding an event to celebrate the Eid at the Taipei Travel Plaza near Taipei Railway Station on June 25. To celebrate the festival with Muslim friends, celebrity artists and performance troupes from Indonesia have been invited to perform on stage. The guests include Fitri Carlina, Septi Vhanesa, and their respective bands. There are additional on-site attractions including interactive games, a halal market, free international calls, and photo opportunity using instant cameras. There are also raffle activities offering prizes such as smart phones, tablets, portable microphones, convenience store vouchers, and more! Noting that Indonesians have the tradition of handing out red envelopes during Hari Raya (which is similar to the Chinese New Year tradition in Taiwan), Mayor Ko Wen-je will attend the event on June 25 to hand out red envelopes to participants! TPEDOIT hopes that citizens will have a chance to learn more about Muslim friends in Taipei through the Eid al-Fitr celebration, joining efforts to build Taipei into a Muslim-friendly City. As a warmup to the main celebration of the Eid on June 25, the organizers will hold a singing contest for Muslim friends at the South-2 Plaza at Taipei Railway Station between 1 PM and 5 PM on June 18. Contestants will have a chance to bring home cash prizes, including NT$8,000 for 1st place, NT$5,000 for second place, and NT$3,000 for 3rd place, as well as three honorable mentions with NT$1,000 award each. The top three winners of the singing competition will also be invited to perform on the main stage on June 25. Similar to Chinese New Year, the holiday is a time for entire families to get together. Before the Eid, followers of Islam have to undergo a month-long period of fasting during Ramadan. The Eid symbolizes the end of Ramadan, when people and families get together for prayers and fine food.
