City of Swing: The 2017 Taipei Jazz Festival
Now in its 17th year, the annual Taipei Jazz Festival has picked the theme “City of Swing” for 2017. Kicking-off in September, this year’s Taipei Jazz Festival offers 2 ticketed concerts, 3 outdoor performances at Daan Forest Park, and an entire series of jazz music promotion activities! Tickets to Randy Brecker and Jeff Lorber Performances on Sale Starting September 15 After the success of last year’s “Feeling Jazz!,” the organizer Department of Cultural Affairs has invited top jazz musicians Randy Brecker and Jeff Lorber to hold respective performances at this year’s jazz festival. Randy Brecker is a well-known trumpeter and one of the founders of The Brecker Brother. The owner of 6 Grammy Award trophies, Brecker is an accomplished artist in the field of jazz, rock, R and B, and Brazilian music. During his visit, Brecker will join the instrumental Brazilian band Balaio led by Marco Bosco in an exciting performance slated for 7:30 PM on Friday, October 20 at the multi-function hall at the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. Three-time Grammy Award nominee Jeff Lorber will also lead the Jaff Lorber Fusion Band in performing at the Riverside Red House Theater Hall starting at 7:30 PM on Sunday, October 22. The tickets for the two performances by the jazz masters will be available starting September 15 on the books.com.tw website. The ticket types include NT$800 seat tickets and NT$500 standing room tickets. A 30-percent discount is available for individuals with valid student IDs. Free Registration to 13 Jazz Promotion Events The 2017 Taipei Jazz Festival features a series of activities promoting jazz music. These include 4 jazz seminar sessions, 3 evening jazz music outdoor performances, 4 campus jazz talks, 1 jazz master class, and a jazz competition for up-and-coming musicians. Registration for the events is free at the official activity website. The 4 jazz seminar sessions will take place between 3 to 5 pm on the following dates: September 9, 16, 23, and 30. Speakers include Tzara Lin, Vincent Hsu, Gin Lin, and Tung Shuen-wen. The 4 campus jazz “train” workshops are scheduled to last from 1 to 5 pm on September 10, 17, 24, and October 1. The speakers at these events include Hsieh Min-yen, Stacey Wei, Uno Kaoru, and Spanish pianist Victor Mendoza. Furthermore, 3 outdoor jazz concert sessions will take place at the New Horizon Boulevard inside Songshan Cultural and Creative Park on the following dates: September 16, 23, and 30. Between 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm on these dates, the musicians will entertain the audience with music spanning bebop jazz to cool jazz to big band jazz to Latin jazz. Featured artists include Skyline, JEG, Bazaar, Uno Kaoru Band, Soy la ley, and Draft Quartet.
