Foreigners Suffering from AIDS Can Receive Treatment in Taiwan
Foreigners in Taiwan who are infected with AIDS will no longer be repatriated, so those who were originally afraid of being repatriated can now feel at ease about receiving a screening test. Those who have been infected but dare not go to the hospital can also seek medical treatment with peace of mind. The “HIV Infection Control and Patient Rights Protection Act” was amended on February 4, 2015 with the original Article 18 entirely deleted. This formally opens the door to the friendly admission of foreign AIDS-infected patients.
Many foreigners are afraid of receiving a screening test as they were worried that they might be forced to leave Taiwan once diagnosed with HIV infection. Some of them who are aware of being infected were also concerned about being repatriated by the Immigration Office when they seek medical treatment. The Kunming Branch of Taipei City Hospital has consulted relevant authorities and now confirmed that foreigners will not be forced to leave Taiwan when they are found to carry the AIDS virus, during the physical examination for entry and residence, general screening report or acceptance of medical treatment after the infection. Meanwhile, couples in a transnational marriage who were formerly forced to split up due to the infection of AIDS, can also live together in Taiwan now.
Zhuang Ping, director of the Epidemic Prevention Group, says that the Ministry of Health and Welfare compiled the special budget for relevant treatment of AIDS 2 years ago, but that it does not apply to foreigners, so foreigners shall pay relevant treatment cost entirely on their own, although the cocktail therapy can be quite expensive.
The Kunming Branch of Taipei City Hospital is willing to provide free anonymous screening of HIV virus for foreigners on demand. Foreigners can seek the assistance of social workers in case of any subsequent difficulties in treatment cost. We welcome foreigners, or informed Taiwanese citizens, to register at the general medicine outpatient in Kunming Branch of Taipei City Hospital via our website, telephone, mobile phone, APP, and so on. For any accompanying demand due to language barrier or for other questions, please dial our hotline for sexually transmitted diseases: 02-23703738.
