City Draws on Barcelona’s Urban Planning Experience

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin met with Barcelona Mayor Xavier Trias on March 9, learning how the Spanish city pushed through massive urban renewal projects on the platform of hosting international events such as the Olympics and Universal Forum of Cultures.
Hau told his counterpart that Barcelona’s experience in planning post-event uses for Olympic stadiums as early as during the preparatory stages can serve as a good example for Taipei to draw on in the run-up to hosting 2017 Universiade.
Stressing that the capital of Taiwan is proud in its achievement in the areas of environmental protection, public transportation, and Internet network, Hau believes it can offer much valuable experience to Barcelona, which aims to transform itself into an “intelligent city.” He also invited Trias to visit Taipei to learn more about the Asian city.
Barcelona’s mayor noted that the capital city of Catalonia has undergone enormous changes following the 1992 Olympics. Despite the ongoing European financial storm leading to economic slowdown and social unrest, Barcelona has so far remained unscathed. Trias also expressed confidence in the city’s appeal to investors, citing the 67,000 visitors attracted to the recent Mobile World Congress.
In addition, the delegation from Taipei finds Barcelona’s decision to endow much power with the civic architect Vicente Guallart impressive; the architect’s expertise has helped to transform the city through an array of infrastructure projects as well as redevelopment programs.
