The Department of Transportation (DOT), Taipei City Government (TCG) announced the 2014 Ten Accident Hot Spots (formerly called Accident-prone Sites), including the intersections of Civic Blvd./Zhongshan N. Rd., Zhongxiao W. Rd./Zhonghua Rd., Zhengzhou Rd./Chengde Rd., Minquan E. Rd./Jianguo N. Rd., Minquan E. Rd./Xinsheng N. Rd., Zhongxiao E. Rd./Songren Rd./Lane 30 of Yongji Rd., Xinglong Rd./Muzha Rd., Xinhai Rd./Keelung Rd., Minquan E. Rd./ Zhongshan N. Rd., and Zhongshan N. Rd./Jiantan Rd. DOT expressed that improvement measures have been drawn up based on accident patterns, one by one. On-site investigations of accidents and inspections of traffic facility adequacy on the scene were conducted by DOT in conjunction with related government agencies. In the meantime, DOT urges drivers to obey traffic rules all the time in order to maintain driving safety.
The top 3 spots of the announced 10 accident hot spots are “intersection of Civic Blvd./Zhongshan N. Rd.,” “intersection of Zhongxiao W. Rd./Zhonghua Rd.” and “intersection of Zhengzhou Rd./Chengde Rd.” DOT indicated that the “intersection of Civic Blvd./Zhongshan N. Rd.” has heavy motorcycle traffic flows during the morning and afternoon rush hours, and accidents at this intersection are mostly collisions caused by “failing to pay attention to conditions in front of the vehicle”. The “intersection of Zhongxiao W. Rd./Zhonghua Rd.” is a multi-fork road with complex traffic lines, and accidents at this intersection are mostly collisions of vehicles going the same direction. At the “intersection of Zhengzhou Rd./Chengde Rd.”, accidents are mainly collisions of small private sedans caused by “failing to keep a safe distance from the front vehicle.”
In the future, DOT will endeavor to make traffic engineering improvements based on the analysis results of accident patterns and causes. DOT will also invite related agencies to perform civil engineering improvements and strengthen law enforcement. In the meantime, DOT urges road users to abide by traffic rules and observe the concept of “defensive driving.” If vehicle occupants can see other road users, they should watch for others’ dangerous behavior. Vehicle occupants can prevent other road users’ accidental violation if they can make their presence clear to others, which can not only protect their own safety but also ensure others’ traffic safety.
