“Home Disaster Prevention: Stay Vigilant with Electrical Safety Checks in Bedrooms and Living Rooms”
As modern life becomes increasingly dependent on electrical appliances, even minor negligence can lead to electrical fires. According to statistics, Taipei City recorded 1,021 fire incidents from January to December 2025, of which 365 cases (35.7%) were caused by electrical factors, making it the leading cause of fires. A typical recent case occurred in late January 2026, where a fire broke out in a residence in Wanhua District, due to a power bank catching fire while being charged unattended. Due to the accumulation of clutter inside the house, the fire spread rapidly. Fortunately, the owner discovered the fire in time and reported it, leading to the successful evacuation of 15 residents with no casualties. Other common cases include extension cords in bedrooms being compressed by furniture, resulting in damaged wiring, or the simultaneous use of multiple high-power appliances in living rooms causing overloads. These examples highlight the importance of proper daily electricity usage habits and regular safety checks. To ensure residential safety, the Fire Department urges the public to follow the "Five Don’ts and One Must" principle and to conduct regular electrical safety inspections: 1. Do not overload electrical outlets. 2. Do not bundle electrical cords. 3. Do not place flammable materials near electrical appliances. 4. Do not use dirty or damaged plugs. 5. Do not leave plugs inserted when not in use. 6. All electrical appliances must have safety certification. In addition, for increasingly common lithium battery products (such as mobile phones and power banks), consumers should ensure they carry certified inspection labels and follow proper usage guidelines. Avoid overcharging, excessive discharging, exposure to moisture, or physical impact.
