Taipei City Labor Inspection Office Develops a Digital Teaching Material to Promote Electric Shock Prevention

In response to an increase in occupational accidents caused by electric shocks in Taipei City during 2023, the Taipei City Labor Inspection Office has launched a digital teaching material for occupational safety and health in 2024 titled “Preventing Electric Shock: A Comprehensive Guide for All.” This initiative employs engaging yet professional digital content to enhance workers’ ability to anticipate and mitigate workplace hazards.

The material focuses on four key aspects of electrical safety: low-voltage electrical work, prevention of leakage in electric machinery and equipment, safe operation of welding machines, and working near high-voltage electricity. The content introduces characters such as “Thor of Happiness Space” and “Master Liang of Home Plumbing,” who work together to rescue workers in electric shock crises, guiding viewers to easily grasp the knowledge needed to prevent electric shocks. Each chapter incorporates case studies of real-life occupational accidents caused by electric shocks, providing detailed explanations of the causes and prevention strategies. Additionally, the material includes simple quizzes to help viewers assess whether they have understood the key safety messages.

Director Kao Bao-Hua of the Department of Labor, Taipei City Government emphasized that electricity is an invisible yet significant potential hazard. Compared with other occupational risks such as falls and falling objects, the risks associated with electric shocks are often overlooked. Director Kao expressed the hope that workers engaged in electrical operations will carefully review this teaching material, acquire the knowledge necessary to prevent electric shocks, and avoid accidents in the workplace.

Director Liang Tsang-Chi of the Labor Inspection Office elaborated on essential safety practices for workers involved in electrical operations. He stressed the importance of wearing appropriate protective equipment, verifying power disconnection using a voltage tester after cutting off the power supply, and prominently displaying warning signs on electrical panels before commencing any operation. These steps are crucial to preventing hazards caused by the unexpected restoration of power during operations.
