A press conference was held at MRT Zhongxiao Fuxing Station to celebrate this landmark achievement.Divided into several stages, the Department of Information Technology (DOIT) pointed out that the first stage of the “Taipei Free Public Wi-Fi Access” initiative has been completed. At this point, users can enjoy free access to the Internet via Wi-Fi at selected locations including city hall, Taipei City district offices, Taipei City Hospital campuses, a number of city libraries, and MRT stations. At areas where the service is available, users can access the network with their mobile device (SSID is “TPE-Free”) by logging into their account. However, DOIT reminds users that due to the limit on bandwidth, there may be restrictions on the use of certain applications and functions. Local users can apply for a free Wi-Fi service account online via their computer or smart phone. To apply, they will need to provide a valid mobile phone number.
