To usher in the flower season, the City is kicking-off celebrations with the camellia exhibition at Taipei Floriculture Experiment Center (TFEC) on February 8. The event will be followed by the start of the Yangmingshan Flower Festival on February 10.

Furthermore, with Valentine’s Day approaching, the event organizers suggest that Yangmingshan boasts a vast selection of sites, offering lovebirds ideal spots to spend time with each other. Choices include the “camellia tunnel” at TFEC, the fountain at Yangming Park, and the parks with illumination shows spotlighting cherry blossom trees at night.

Taipei Camellia Exhibition

According to Parks and Street Lights Office (PSLO) Director Huang Li-yuan, TFEC has been devoted to the cultivation and research of camellias since 1949. The camellia shrubs in the center - mostly over 40 years of age – come to full bloom in turn between the months of November and April. The facility holds arguably the largest camellia exhibitions on the island, showcasing over 8,000 strands of flowers spanning 500 varieties.

Camellia enthusiasts should not miss out on the opportunity to visit the 12-day exhibition starting February 8. This year’s event also features rarely seen bonsais from the private collections of Chinese Camellia Association members and Shuangxi Camellia Village in New Taipei.

Yangmingshan Flower Festival

Next up will be the Yangmingshan Flower Festival, lasting from February 10 through March 19. The grand opening ceremony for the 38-day-long event will spotlight dance and music performances by indigenous people, Chinese orchestra, cheerleading, street dance, martial arts, and Facebook ‘like’ activities among others.

An area boasting numerous cherry blossom trees near the fountain inside Yangming Park will be the location of nighttime illumination shows. The trees will be lit by lights between 6 PM and 9 PM, bringing luminous night views of the flowers to visitors.

In addition to flower viewing, PSLO also invites the public to sign up for eco and cultural tours to learn more about the history of Taipei Floriculture Experiment Center and Yangmingshan American Military Housing. Flower Festival Traffic Control Measures

For those planning to visit the Yangmingshan Flower Festival, the city government reminds visitors that traffic control measures will take effect in the vicinity of the venue (including Yangming Park, Hushan Road, Zhongxing Road, and Yangjin Highway) during the event between February 10 and March 19.

The checkpoint for uphill traffic is located at the intersection of Fuxing Bridge entrance and Lane 1 of Zhishan Road Section 2. Downhill traffic checkpoint is located at the intersection of Yangming Road and Zhongheng Road.

Traffic control hours for uphill traffic: 7 AM – 4 PM.
Traffic control hours for downhill traffic: 2 PM – 6 PM.

To avoid possible hassles and traffic jams, the public is encouraged to take public transportation to the event venue on Yangmingshan.
